What Google Discover is and how a business can appear
Google Discover is Google's mobile feed: it shows content without the person typing a search, based on what they have already read. The bare query is different: people want to turn it on or off. This page answers both, and then what a business can do to be eligible. There is no signup button.
What it is, without mixing it up with search
Google Discover is a feed. The person does not type a query. Google shows them pages, videos, and news that fit what they have already looked at. It lives on the phone: the Google app and, on many Android devices, the screen you reach by swiping. It is not the results page. It is not Google News, even when they share a piece. And it is not an AI Overview: that summary answers a search. Discover does not even wait for a search.
The bare query is from someone who wants the button. People ask how to open it, how to remove it, and why it does not work. An article only for publishers leaves those people without an answer. The questions above cover the phone. The rest of the page is for whoever publishes.
What a publisher sees in Search Console
If a URL enters the feed, Search Console has a Discover report: impressions, clicks, and the pages. If the report does not appear, it is not broken. There is no data yet, or so little that Google does not show it. You cannot force it from a property setting.
The traffic, when it exists, rises and falls without warning. A page can have a strong day and then disappear. It does not resemble a keyword you work on for months. That is why it is not used as a sales forecast. It is treated as extra, after search already understands the site.
What Google documents, and what the industry invents
A large image. Google asks for a wide featured image, at least 1,200 pixels, that is not a logo and not text baked into the file. max-image-preview:large in the robots meta helps Google use that image. It does not guarantee it.
Original content. A page that stands on its own, with a clear title and no filler. The feed is not the place for a 200-word text that repeats the keyword.
The site, not the lone post. Discover leans on signals from the property: that Google already crawls the site, that the content is not thin, that headlines are not misleading. A brilliant post on a new, empty domain almost never gets in.
There is no signup button. Whoever sells "we activate Discover" is selling the work above, or selling nothing you can check.
The headline must not promise one thing and the first paragraph another. In the feed the title is almost everything someone sees before the click. An inflated title can earn the click and an immediate exit, and that signal does not help the next impression.
How it differs from ordinary SEO
In search you optimize a page for a query. In Discover there is no query. You optimize a page so it is readable, has an image that can be used, and belongs to a site Google already distributes. The H1 still matters. The exact keyword matters less than the topic.
It is also not the same job as appearing in AI Overviews. There the text has to be citable as an answer to a question. Here the text has to deserve a slot in the feed of someone who did not ask. Both can happen in a good article. They are not achieved with the same trick.
What a business can do, in order
Do not open a Discover strategy if the site is not indexed yet. The feed does not jump ahead of the index. The fix is in indexing problems.
Pick a page that can be read without context: a guide, an explanation, a real piece of news from your field if you actually have one. Not a six-line service card.
Use your own image, wide, at least 1,200 pixels, near the title. Not a collage with the logo on top of the text.
Write a title that says what is inside. The same standard as in title and meta description, with less obsession about the keyword and more about not lying.
Publish when you have something to say. Cadence does not turn the feed on. Neither does an empty Tuesday page.
Look at Search Console. If there is no report, there is nothing to optimize yet. If there is, read which URL appeared and resemble that one, not another.
What you will not be able to promise
There is no date. There is no percentage of traffic that a local business is "owed." A clinic or a firm can appear if they publish something useful that people save and read. They can also never appear, and the business can still be healthy because the map pack does bring patients. Discover does not replace that profile or the service page.
If the goal is to be found when people search, the work is still SEO. Discover is the layer on top, for when the article already deserves a place in a feed. Forcing it earlier is publishing for a channel that has not invited you.
What Discover asks for, and what does not turn it on
The feed is personalized, with large images and original content. The table separates a requirement Google documents from a lever people invent.
Piece | What the feed asks for | What does not turn it on |
|---|---|---|
Image | A large image, at least 1,200 px wide, in the content | The logo repeated on every post |
Page | Original content that makes sense without a search | A thin rewrite of someone else's text |
Signal | A site that already has traction in search and Chrome | A button that says submit to Discover |
Topic | Something that fits what that person already reads | Publishing around the clock just in case |
Conclusion
Discover is not switched on with a setting. It becomes possible when the page has a large image, text that can be read without context, and a site Google already treats as useful. The traffic, if it arrives, is unstable. It is not planned like a keyword.
Frequently asked questions about Google Discover
What is Google Discover?
It is the content feed Google shows on mobile, in the Google app and sometimes on the home screen, without the person typing a search. It chooses what to show from what that person has already read and searched. It is not the results page and it is not an ad.
How do I open Google Discover?
On a phone, open the Google app or swipe left on some Android devices. If you do not see it, it can be turned on in the app settings. That is the reader's side. There is no signup for the publisher: Google decides whether a page enters the feed.
Why is Google Discover not working?
On the phone, it is sometimes turned off in the app settings, or the feed has emptied because it has not been used. On a website, "not working" usually means no URL has appeared. There is no switch. You need original content, a wide image, and a site that already has signals of usefulness.
Can I turn Google Discover off?
Yes, on the phone: in the Google app settings you can turn the feed off or unfollow topics. That does not delete your website from Google. It only stops showing you that carousel. A publisher cannot remove one specific reader from the feed.
